Mendocino work laser cut Hand Cut Freeing the Subtle Essence details CV
Comfortable in the world, is that a concept? Simplicity, modest materials and techniques make me comfortable. Breaking rules is what I want to do in art, because I can’t do it in the world we have created together. Everything is changing so fast, and in my life it is too. I can’t do work that is too technical these days, I want a repetition that is easy and can serve as a practice of mental freeing. Paper and glue suit me fine. Cutting requires few tools.
I’ve come from New Mexico by way of Detroit / Bloomfield Hills to California to make a go of it here. Graduate school blew my head apart as I wanted it to, and I am left rebuilding my life and some direction in the art I do. I see some feeling emerging, from ‘figure’ to ‘center’ to what’s the center of a figure, a person. Being is the soul and we have a body to take care of, but body is not the center (Soul is the center?). Concepts come from a word base that is hierarchal in a paternal way. If soul is the center, then subtleties such as ‘a glance’ and ‘a gesture’ give more true resonance than the information a body can give. Resonance is information on a level true to being embodied. In the body, yes of it too; but beyond the mere body as well. Okay I’m getting used to being here in California, though I am trying to get all of my self here, fully embodied.
Obsession with the watch, trance work, repetitive visuals…I like these as a way to check into the inaccessible electrical pulses, the magnetic lines between poles. Vibrating visuals remind me that it is not only the eyes we see with. The concept is beyond me, let it develop on it’s own.
And, as far as the machine cutting goes....
The paper is cut with a laser cutter, as in the strips that are crocheted, and by hand with a knife blade for the flat work. Painting, stenciling, folding, bending thick paper and an exact system of winding the paper to the left and to the right while turning it upside down, is part of the architecture of the coiling with the laser work. Other twists give other repetitions. Knife cutting is generally straight and curved lines easy for the hand and arm to make with a breathing rhythm.
